The body fights invasion of pathogen via at least two pathways: (a) by anti-germ antibodies; (b) by cells
that kill germs directly (e.g. by phagocytosis and then short-range bombardment with Reactive
Oxygen Species, ROS) intracellularly.
Recent studies in collaboration with the Center for Biomedical Testing in California showed that the co-
incubation of immune cells with FAS can increase the production of ROS by these cells, leading
to greater lethality against engulfed pathogens. We intend to show that our product can
improve killing of dangerous pathogens such as hospital-acquired infections and those affecting
wounded military personnel in the field.
